A group of words which makes a complete sense is called a Sentence.
Or, A combination of words that makes a complete sense is called a Sentence. Such as :
Sakiba is a good girl.
The sky is blue.
The boys play football in the field.
Parts of Sentence
Every complete sentence has two parts : 1. Subject and 2. Predicate.
1. Subject
Subject is a person or a thing that does something is a sentence.
Example :
Nupur reads a novel.
Rahim is my sister.
Kinds of Sentence
Sentence is of five kinds according to its meaning :
- Assertive Sentence
- Interrogative Sentence
- Imperative Sentence
- Optative Sentence
- Exclamatory Sentence
Assertive Sentence
A sentence, which simply asserts something is called an Assertive Sentence.
E.g.
- Anwar goes to school.
- Mogdum plays football.
- The boy does not make a noise.
- The girl has no pen.
Interrogative Sentence
A sentence, which asks a question about a person or a thing is called an Interrogative Sentence.
Example :
- Is Nabab absent today?
- Has the boy a pen?
- Does he go to market everyday?
- Have you helped the blind man?
- What are you doing here?
- When will you come back home?
Imperative Sentence
A sentence, which expresses a command, a request or an advice is called an Imperative Sentence.
Example :
- Go home now.
- Do not run in the sun.
- Attend to your lessons.
- Let me read the book.
- Please give me the pen.
- Let the boy go home.
- Kindly return the book.
Sentence is of three types according to its form and structure. They are :
- Simple Sentence
- Complex Sentence
- Compound Sentence
Simple Sentence
A sentence which has only one Subject, only one Finite verb and only one clause is called a simple sentence. The Finite verb may be expressed or understood.
Hence, each of the sentences in the passage is a simple sentence.
Example :
a. Nadia is in class nine.
b. Returning from school, they play in the lawn.
c. Both Nadia and Jhalak are good students.
d. They like to play after school.
